Surrendering a horse
into our care

We are here to help!

We are committed to breaking the auction to kill-pen cycle and therefore offer owners the option to surrender their horses and other equines into our care. Please bear in mind that we are a small operation with limited resources, so this service is offered on a space and need-available basis. To best serve the needs in our area, we currently accept surrendered animals from Wyoming only.  We also cooperate with local law-enforcement officials on seizure and abandonment cases.

How it works

We understand that the decision to part with your beloved equine friend can be very difficult and we are here to help you through the process. Reasons for seeking to surrender are varied and personal, and we conduct the surrender process with respect for your privacy and thanks for putting your trust in us.

Please know that because our space and funds are limited, we will not be able to take in every equine about which we are contacted. We evaluate every case, however, to be able to help as many deserving horses and equines as we are able within our resources. If we are unable to take in your horse or equine, we will do our best to connect you with additional resources.

Surrender

All applications for surrender are reviewed by the Board of Directors of the rescue. If we are able to take in your horse or equine, we will contact you to make arrangements for drop-off or pick-up. If you have any reservations about surrendering, you are welcome to visit our facilities and meet with us in person. References can also be provided upon request.

Further information about surrendering

  • A current brand inspection will be required at the time of surrender. We are unable to take in equines without this document.
  • If you are not the owner of the equine, please know that we will need the consent of the registered owner in order to complete a surrender.
  • We welcome past owners to visit their surrendered animals during the training and recovery process at our facility by appointment.
  • We NEVER send horses to the auction and we do not operate as a “kill-pen.” All equines in our care are evaluated for adoption readiness and go through a multi-step adoption process to ensure that their next home will provide for their care and well-being.
  • We are dedicated to providing the best medical care and training to all equines that enter into our care, however, we also reserve the right to make end-of-life decisions when it is in the best interest of the equines or for the safety of our volunteers. Sometimes, when a horse comes to us with significant medical issues, after evaluation by a licensed veterinarian, or should treatments not prove successful for rehabilitation, euthanasia is the most humane course of action. These decisions are made in accordance with our Euthanasia Policy and require a vote by the Board of Directors. We NEVER euthanize for space or financial purposes, and all equines are given ample time to attempt recovery from medical conditions if needed.
