Happy Tails

We are committed to breaking the kill pen auction cycle.

MSER volunteers spend months, and sometimes even years, rehabilitating and training the horses to be ready for their perfect home.

Meet the horses and other animals who have found theirs!

Pheonix

Our wonderful Phoenix has been adopted! This girl has come so far since we met her. It has been such an honor to watch her grow from the underweight and shut down horse we met, to the beautiful, feisty, and sometimes zoomy girl we know today. Her confidence around humans has doubled several times over as she learned new skills on the ground and in the saddle. She joined us for adventures in the Wyoming mountains and never minded the bikers, hikers, and dogs we shared the trail with.

It was a tear-filled goodbye (as they tend to be) but we know her new family will love her just as much as we do. She will be a wonderful trail partner and share over 100 acres with her new horse buddies!

Join us in cheering for Phoenix as she makes this beautiful new start!

Boomer

Join us in wishing a happy adoption day to Boomer! Older horses can be hard to find homes for, but Boomer was just what this loving family was looking for! With his gentle ways and youthful energy, he will be a wonderful confidence booster for some in the family who want a horse refresher and some just learning to ride!

Boomer will join another family horse on several acres here in Wyoming where he can live the easy life. We couldn’t be happier with this ideal match for this sweet soul.

Boomer came to us last summer from a loving family who hoped he might find a new situation giving joy to beginning riders. He is well-trained and well-mannered, though loves to move out! Despite his 30 years, Boomer is sound and has plenty of energy. He has so much left to give. Congratulations, Boomer, on finding your people!

Jian

Jian emerged as a beacon of hope amidst an animal neglect case, standing alongside several other horses and goats. Despite enduring a severe eye infection that necessitated its removal, Jian’s resilience has been nothing short of remarkable. In the spring of 2023, she found herself embraced by a loving family, only to return to the rescue through circumstances beyond her control, a testament to her unwavering spirit.

The name Jian draws inspiration from Chinese mythology, symbolizing unity, companionship, and love embodied by a one-winged, one-eyed bird. Just like its mythical counterpart, Jian thrives in partnership, demonstrating the power of collaboration and solidarity.

Now, Jian embarks on a new chapter in Oklahoma, where sprawling acres await her alongside fellow rescue horses. Here, she eagerly anticipates endless trail rides with her new owner, embodying the resilience and indomitable spirit that define her journey.

Fennec

One of our longest-term residents, Fennec was a barn favorite who taught many of our volunteers the basics of horse care and handling. A patient teacher and gentle, sensitive soul, Fennec will be missed, but we couldn’t be happier for her new situation.

Fennec had been a feral broodmare, liquidated with the rest of her herd through a low-end livestock auction. She had been pregnant but lost her foal in the trailer on the way there. When she came to us she was unhandled and timid but quickly came to enjoy human contact and affection. She sailed through groundwork training but had a hard time getting comfortable with the idea of a saddle, so we decided she would happiest as a companion to other horses.

Fennec’s sweet and easygoing nature landed her a place as best friend to a blind horse who had just lost her companion of many years. She will be loved and spoiled on a beautiful property in Wyoming.

Valkyrie

Our rockstar trail pony finally found her ideal match with a family in Wyoming. Valkyrie spent three years in our care going to training clinics, riding in parades, and exploring Wyoming’s great outdoors. She now gets to live her best life going on trails and doing ranch work with many acres to roam and a herd of horses for company.

After an initially rocky transition from her life as a feral broodmare, this stellar Welsh-Arabian pony in her mid-teens was an A+ student of Human 101. She loved to get her lessons just right and grew to become a fun riding partner for someone who likes a responsive horse.

Valkyrie found just the person to appreciate her need for a light touch who will take her on all the adventures she craves!

Jerry

Jerry is a middle-aged gentleman of a hinny (horse papa, donkey mama), whose loving owner could no longer keep him and made the difficult decision to give him a chance at a new life with a new family.

This barn favorite with the oversized ears matching an oversized personality found his forever someone with a woman in Colorado who needed company for her older gelding, who was getting pushed around by his herd-mates. If there’s one thing Jerry is good at, it’s being everyone’s best buddy, so we are thrilled that he gets to make this his full-time job!

Sacred

Sacred is one of those special horses who needed a special someone. Handsome, but opinionated, this older Medicine Hat Paint gelding finally found that someone after trying out a different home and returning to us for a little while. He made the long trip to Iowa for just the right person who valued his goofy, independent spirit.

Sacred was one of four horses who was entrusted into our care by someone battling an illness who needed to find them a good situation. His foundation of basic training was deepened at the rescue, but due to occasional unsoundness, it became clear that what Sacred really needed was a retirement home where he could enjoy room to move and an easy, pastured life. Thank you to his new owner who can give him everything this special boy needs!

Loki

Loki found his unicorn! This handsome Lusitano cross gelding found his match in central Wyoming, where he will get the opportunity to try his hand at liberty work, an ideal job for a friendly, spirited horse with an active mind.

Loki came to us as an owner surrender who had the beginnings of training, but a habit of explosive, fearful reactions. While he went through extensive training in our program, it became clear that he simply wasn’t psychologically comfortable with saddle work, so his ideal home was one that would give him a job but not push him across his anxiety threshold.

We are so thrilled that Loki found just such a person to appreciate his vibrancy and give him a life both of the snuggles he craves and a fulfilling purpose.

Cayenne

This sweet, spicy mini mare found her forever family in the mountains of  northern California, where she will get to grow up alongside a little girl on acres to roam.

Cayenne came to us via a late-night phone-call to take in a pony with a significant eye injury who was unable to receive care in her area. After coming to us, Cayenne had one eye surgically removed and received corrective hoof trims to help her through an episode of founder.

This spunky little lady was an immediate barn favorite who loves cuddles, flirting with the boys, and flaunting her attitude. She is saddle trained and will have a lifetime to teach her new little rider all about horse care and that special bond only a horse can give you!

Rayleigh

We brought Rayleigh home from a livestock auction in the spring of 2020 as a yearling filly. We immediately fell in love with her sweet disposition. Rayleigh spent some months at the rescue learning basic ground manners, and then was taken in by a foster to do some growing. Our plan had been to bring her back to the rescue for additional training after she was grown, however, her foster human and horse companions fell in love with her and asked to keep her in the family.

We happily agreed, and Rayleigh officially joined her forever family in the fall of 2022. She now lives on a large llama rescue and ranch with several horse companions, including MSER’s own Earhart (now Lila Rose)!

Chai and Boba

Nigerian Dwarfs Chai (light) and Boba (dark) had a big fan club when they came to the rescue for their darling faces and cool beards. While not the most social of critters, they had a special place with us.

The two goats came to the rescue as court-ordered surrenders from an animal neglect case (they were found by chance locked in an over-stuffed shed with no food or water).

Chai and Boba got to go live their best lives with the goat herd of an experienced owner in southern Wyoming in the summer of 2022.

Sundae

Sundae came to the rescue as the result of court animal neglect case. This zoomy little mini is chock full of personality and sweet as ice cream!

After physical check-ups and a bit of rehab, we discovered that she was already saddle-trained, and just needed to find her people.

Sundae went home to just such a family in Colorado, where she will keep two other horses company and be loved on by the whole family!

Siren

Sweet, sassy Siren found her forever someone with a young woman in central Wyoming who loves her vibrant spirit and will give her plenty of room to roam and many other animal buddies for company.

Siren came to us as a 4-year-old unhandled broodmare, but her steady, unflappable disposition helped her sail through training so that she was quickly out on the trails, walking in a parade, and even mastering skills at a Buck Brannaman clinic.

Siren will be able to continue to grow in her training with her new human partner as they hit the trails together!

Juneau

We couldn’t have imagined a better outcome for our “June-bug!” Juneau gets to live the rest of her days carefree on a 100-acre ranch, where her primary job will be to keep an older sorrel gelding company.

When Juneau came to us in March of 2021, she was a re-rescue from a situation that did not provide her adequate care. In addition to lack of access to food and water, she had an enlarged knee from an untended injury we were hoping we would be able to treat. X-rays soon revealed, however, that, at only 4 years old, she had severe and untreatable arthritis in her knee that limits her range of motion and effectively eliminates her prospects for riding.

Juneau, however, has always loved a good romp with her buddies, and she found that very special someone who will let her lead her best life, loved, cared for, and at her own pace!

Brego and Shasta

This was our first double adoption! Brego and Shasta both went home with the same loving family to Boulder, Wyoming, where Brego will get to take it easy on trail rides and teaching kids to ride, and Shasta will have a fun career as a 4-H pony!

Brego came to us as a retired ranch horse with lameness in a rear leg stemming from a minor case of ringbone. We were able to take him in for evaluation and treatment thanks to a generous donation to Tolkien’s Fund. Thankfully, his lameness proved manageable with medication, and he regained soundness. His steady nature and knowledge of the basics make him great for learners and kids!

Shasta was the third of four surrenders (including the paint “brothers” Joe and Sacred) from a loving owner in Wyoming who was unable to keep them due to a diagnosis with a terminal illness. She came to us as a halter-broke broodmare who needed saddle training, which she quickly progressed through. This mare is all sorts of talented, and we couldn’t be happier to see her and Brego settled into their new home together!

Griffin

We brought Griffin home from Centennial Livestock Auction in October of 2020. She was extremely malnourished three-year-old with severely neglected hooves. When we brought her to the rescue, she was quick to halter, but head-shy and distrustful of other horses. She progressed quickly in her training, but, while fantastic on the ground, continued to have an issue with spontaneous bucking under saddle, so we knew it would take a special person to patiently help her reach her full potential.

She found her unicorn just in time for Valentine’s Day in February of 2022! Griffin went to live with her family on a ranch in Brush, Colorado, where she will have many buddies to romp with and a wonderful human to continue her training.

Rogue

We called Rogue our “Wonderpony” with good reason! This smart, loving Welsh-Arabian cross was surrendered into our care in December of 2020 along with Valkyrie and T’Challa. She came to us as an unhandled 15-year-old but quickly learned to enjoy people’s attention and life under saddle, especially in the great outdoors!

Rogue went to her new home in the Black Hills of South Dakota in October of 2021 where she will get all the spoiling she missed out on in her early life! We wish her many happy trails ahead!

Joe

Joe was surrendered to MSER in the spring of 2021 when his loving owner could no longer care for him. This handsome 19-year-old paint gelding was a crowd favorite and Instagram sensation, but he won hearts much closer to home as well.

MSER volunteer Jessica Evans felt an instant bond with the gentle giant, and, after the opportunity to work with him, made the decision to adopt. She grew up around horses and in a ranching community, but Joe is the first horse of her own, a true love match!

T’Challa

Named for Marvel’s one and only Black Panther, T’Challa (at right) came to the rescue as a 10-year-old, largely unhandled stud in December of 2020. Following his gelding, he began his training to learn how to be around people. He quickly learned to soak up love and eventually how to mind his manners!

His trainer, MSER volunteer Janna Urschel, had been looking for an equine partner to get out on the trails and eventually try out endurance riding with. She enjoyed working with T’Challa so much that she fell in love and decided to welcome him into her family. She loves his fun and sometimes challenging disposition, his energy, and his willingness to trust and learn new things.

Janna jokes that fate has a funny way of bringing you black Arabians, as T’Challa joins Janna’s family along with fellow MSER alumna and black Arabian, Hope (left)!

Maathai

We rescued Maathai from Centennial Livestock Auction in the summer of 2020 along with buddy and pen-mate Truth (see below). She was named after activist and scientist Wangari Maathai, the first female African nobel prize winner.

Maathai came to us as an unhandled three-year-old who quickly warmed up to people and progressed through her training with remarkable speed. During her time with us, she went on many adventures and posed as a model in remarkable photo sessions in Colorado’s and Wyoming’s backcountry.

This spunky mare is an absolute lover who was adopted in June of 2021 and will be getting a lifetime of snuggles and new adventures with her new family in Cheyenne!

Truth

Truth was rescued from the Centennial livestock auction in summer of 2020 at the age of nine. She was so malnourished that she needed to gain several hundred pounds before we could begin to work with her. A lip tattoo revealed that Truth started life as a racehorse. She had some early successes on the track, but was quickly passed on when she stopped winning.

We named Truth after Sojourner Truth for her indomitable spirit and resilience. She was adopted in February, 2021 by a loving family in northern Colorado, where she gets to try new ventures in dressage, jumping, and hitting the trails!

Easley

One of our first rescues, Easley was saved from auction in the spring of 2019 as a yearling. After spending some time at a foster home to do some growing, this spunky grulla mare came back to us as a two-year-old for saddle training. She was a quick study and progressed quickly in the arena and on trails.

Easley went home for the holidays in December of 2020 to her new family in northern Wyoming, where she will get to enjoy many miles of trails and new challenges!

Tesla

Named for inventor Nicola Tesla, this Bashkir Curly Horse gelding was saved from the Centennial Livestock Auction in July of 2019. His journey with us began when we fell in love with him as a yearling thrown in with a herd of cattle at the auction to be sold by the pound.

After doing some growing in his foster home for a year, Tesla returned to us in the summer of 2020, where he progressed quickly with his training on the ground and under saddle.

Tesla’s new mom drove all the way from Arkansas to get him and they were in love as soon as they saw each other! He will be used mainly as a trail horse. Congratulations on your new family, Tesla!

Kahlo

Kahlo was saved from the Centennial Livestock Auction in May 2020. Kahlo is named for artist and activist Frida Kahlo. She is a beautiful, 16-year-old possible Gypsy Vanner cross mare who had been neglected for some time.

After spending some much needed time with MSER, it was clear that she would be best as a companion horse due to arthritis. She retired to a quiet home in Colorado where she can be doted on!

Earhart

Earhart, named for the one and only Amelia, was an auction save in 2019. This beautiful quarter horse mare absolutely loves attention. She was started under saddle at a Buck Brannaman clinic in early June of 2020.

She is a very willing learner who found her forever home on a big llama ranch in northern Colorado, where she has lots of room to roam and a wonderful new owner to love on her!

Annie

Annie is a very sweet mare who has now found a loving home in Laramie! MSER is so excited for her to have her own person who will give her all the love and attention she deserves.

Annie was restarted under saddle after she was surrendered to Mountain Shadows Equine Revival with her buddy Hope (see below). She was consistently picking up both leads, side-passing, stopping on a loose rein, and learning to neck rein when she was adopted. She loves her girl and all the new adventures they share! Now named Venus, she and her girl are rocking it at cross-country jumping shows!

Hudson

This sweet guy has such an amazing story. After being dumped in a pasture with life-threatening injuries, then being sold at a meat auction, this gentle giant is now a therapy horse for teens at the Cathedral Home for Children here in Laramie.

Hudson is such an inspiring horse, and we are so happy he is surrounded by all the love and affection he has been missing these many years.

Prada

Prada had been shown in halter before she came to us as an owner surrender as a 3-year-old registered Arabian mare. She has an inquisitive mind and the plenty of spunk!

She is a wonderful, sweet horse who found her perfect home in Montana with an active, horse knowledgeable family who will give her all the attention she deserves!

Hope

We are so excited to announce that Hope got to kick off the new year of 2020 with her awesome new family! Congratulations to Janna and her beautiful family. Hope is so lucky to have not one, but two, horse-crazy girls to dote on her!

Hope is a 22-year-old, Arabian mare who came in as an owner surrender. After gaining some much-needed weight and a training refresher, youth volunteer Rowan fell in love with her. Her parents announced the adoption on Christmas day of 2019, and the two have been inseparable since.

Hope has worked hard to overcome head shyness, including how to take a bit for the first time. Hope and Rowan participate in 4-H, both English and Western, as well as rocking out in cross-country jumping, skijoring, and now cart-driving! She frequently makes cameos as an MSER graduate ambassador by participating in the Jubilee Days parade and other local events and gives lessons to local kiddos.

Hope lives in Laramie, Wyoming with her family of kiddos, goats, dogs, and chickens!

Oakley

Oakley found a new home as a 4H pony and is doing great! Her relaxed and easy-going personality makes her easy to learn new things with her family.

Oakley is a very sweet and calm grade quarter horse filly. She was saved from Centennial Livestock auction in April 2019. Once she came home to Laramie she started her saddle training and did great!
