Valkyrie is a dynamo of a trail pony who responds to a light touch under saddle. Who would have known that this former feral broodmare would turn out so happy in people’s company!

She came to us in December of 2020 with a deep distrust of people. It took us six months to build her trust enough to halter her, but since that time, she has become quite affectionate and progressed quickly from halter to groundwork to saddle. Valkyrie was adopted late in 2022, but returned to us when her new owner contracted a serious illness and was no longer able to care for her.

Valkyrie excels on trails, has ridden in a parade, and participated in a Buck Brannaman training clinic. She is a perfectionist and is very responsive to a light touch under saddle. She likes to get things just right! Since she is still green and very particular, she will need an advanced rider who can work with her sensitivity and help her continue to learn. She is her best self on trails, where she really relaxes and moves out, so we envision a trail, or even endurance, home for her.

She is sound, loads, stands for the farrier, no buck, bite, or rear, though she will “squirt” sideways when startled and gets watchy when nervous with new stimuli. She has a skin condition on her shoulders caused by repeated sunburns from a lack of shelter during her first 15 years. Since coming into our care, it has improved dramatically with access to shelter, a special sun shirt, and application of sun block, which she will continue to need for her fair skin. She is generally an easy keeper, but has a predisposition towards insulin resistance, so will need a low-sugar diet and will do best kept on a dry lot.
