Meet Sedona!
Status: In Training
Age: 11
Gender: Mare
Breed: Appaloosa
Height: 14.2 hh
Handler experience needed: Confident Intermediate
Sedona was rescued from a livestock auction where she was dumped with fellow broodmare Opal, along with dozens of others from her herd. She was heavily pregnant and ready to deliver. We were initially very worried about her and the baby’s health since she was underweight, malnourished, and suffering from a respiratory infection. However, she waited an extra week to deliver, until she felt safe with us at MSER, where she had access to plentiful food, water, and shelter, and safely delivered a healthy baby colt on May 27th, 2023.
After finishing a successful semester in Colorado State University’s Right Horse Program, where she received more consistent work and training in haltering, handling, and groundwork. Sedona is easy to handle on the ground, and having mastered her groundwork skills, has moved on to being started under saddle.
This summer, we have arranged for Sedona to stay down in Colorado to continue her training with the same student she worked with in the Right Horse program!
Also in great news, the clinical trial Sedona has been participating in to treat her ocular squamous cell carcinoma has been an overwhelming success. The CSU team did not feel she needed any additional injections and the status of her eyes is back to a “precancerous” stage. This was described to us as the human equivalent of being in “remission.”
Sedona will have a routine follow-up in a few months and will still need to be continually watched for any signs the cancer is reoccurring, and continue to wear her UV protective mask during all daytime hours, all year round. Great things are happening for this wonderful girl, and we are so excited to see all the progress she makes as she continues her training this summer.
Please see our “How to Adopt” page for more information on this process and how you can submit an adoption application for Sedona!
