Betty was brought to Mountain Shadows in November of 2024.

Betty is a 25-30-year-old mare (likely closer to 30) who was surrendered to us after being rehomed by a loving family when her original owner passed away.

After being passed around a few times, she landed with a family who ultimately treated her poorly and starved her.

After being seized by the sheriff, she was retrieved by her original owners, who contacted us. Betty has a history as an Amish cart horse, is kid broke, and may have been a lesson pony at one point as well.

After working closely with our veterinarian, we know that Betty has Equine Cushing’s Disease, which is now under control with a once-daily medication to manage the clinical signs. With her Cushing’s under control, Betty has a new lease on life; her energy has increased, and we have seen a dramatic decrease in her Cushing’s symptoms.

Betty will continue to need medication to control her Cushing’s, and due to significant dental attrition and lost teeth from the untreated Cushing’s, more, Betty relies on a soft mash and grain diet to meet her nutritional requirements. Betty also needs more frequent dental care, also due to the Cushing’s and her age. But despite this, Betty is a super chill lady, loves attention and affection, and deserves a soft place to spend the rest of her days
