Horses in Training

Easley

This little lady is back with us for a short while to re-tune her training and continue the search for her forever home! Easley is a 2-year-old grulla mare who was rescued from auction as a yearling in spring of 2019. She is a very willing learner who knows all her gaits under saddle. She is currently undergoing evaluation before she is put up for adoption, so watch for her soon on the adoption page!

Maathai

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Matthai.jpg

Matthai was also rescued from the Centennial Livestock Auction on June 3rd, 2020 with Truth. She is named after Wangari Maathai, the first female African Nobel Peace Prize winner, and is a 14 hand, 2-3 year old filly. She came in pretty unhandled, but she is sweet and curious and we are confident she will come around quickly.

Update 8/25/20

Maathai is progressing quickly with her training. She is a very willing learner with half a dozen rides under saddle. She has a calm demeanor, is good with her feet, leads and longes well, and isn’t spooky despite all sorts of distractions.

Truth

Truth was rescued from the Centennial Livestock Auction June 3rd, 2020. She is named after Sojourner Truth and is a 17 hand, 9 year old off the track thoroughbred who raced under the name Compatible Miss. She had about 10 starts with one win and one second. She is currently a couple hundred pounds underweight and very sweet and easy to be around, although quite buddy sour.

Update 7/30/2020

After some time in quarantine, Truth is now at the main barn with the other horses! As she gets healthier every day, her personality is really coming out. She’s an in-your-pocket horse who loves attention and complains if she’s not the one being taken out of the pasture to work. She is great with her feet and definitely has training, as she did well lunging on a line and even a few rides under saddle for evaluation. Truth will remain at MSER for a few more months until she fully regains her health.

Update 9/14/20

Truth is gaining weight well and enjoying being the lead mare in our pasture of 2-year-olds! After evaluation by the vet, some temporary lameness was revealed to be a matter of thin soles, so we are doing her ground work on soft footing. She will need boots or shoes and pads for riding on harder surfaces, but in the meantime, she is building muscle and will be ready to ride under saddle soon.

Rayleigh

Sorrel yearling rescue horse

Rayleigh is a yearling filly who was saved from the Centennial Livestock Auction in April 2020. She is named for Lord Rayleigh, who won the Nobel Prize in 1904 for his contributions to theoretical and experimental physics. Welcome to the family, Rayleigh!

Update 6/6/2020

Rayleigh is out of quarantine and at MSER for some basic halter and groundwork training!

Update 7/30/2020

Rayleigh had a good two months of attention and training from our volunteers at MSER. She learned to walk nice on a lead and to pick up all of her feet to be cleaned. Miss Ray was dropped off over the weekend at her foster home for the winter. She will be there to grow and take care of a younger colt. We are sure going to miss her lovely personality, but are so appreciative to her wonderful foster family for taking such good care of her!

Cannary

Cannary is being sponsored by  Equine Energy Solutions!

Cannary was brought to Mountain Shadows May 2020 from a rescue in Oregon. She is named for the one and only Martha Jane Cannary, aka Calamity Jane. She is relatively untouched and a little skittish, however she is very sweet! She was brought to MSER for more training to help her find her perfect home.

Update 6/17/2020

This girl has really started to come around! She no longer flinches with every touch, no longer is scared by humans and other horses working around her, can be confidently worked around with the flag, ties well, accepts fly spray, and is just a super sweet girl. Although she is nervous of people, after every startle she takes a deep breath and presses her head into her human’s chest for rubs. While her scars will present some limitations, the vet has confirmed her sound for riding and estimates she is 9-10 years old.

Update 7/30/2020

Cannary has come so far since her first days with us! She has had her halter on since coming to MSER so that we could work with her and earn her trust more quickly without having an unpleasant haltering session first. She not only had a strong fear of humans close to her, but would full on panic at anything over her neck or head, thus making haltering her difficult and dangerous. Well, she officially trusts us enough so that we can calmly and safely get her halter on! And it didn’t stop there – she also walks along happily with a surcingle on, both in the arena and outside.

Update 9/8/20

We are excited to announce that Cannary is now being sponsored by  Equine Energy Solutions. Sponsorship covers her feed, board, vet care, and supplements, allowing us to put much-needed resources towards our other horses.

Cannary has recently been training in a heavy western saddle, and is getting used to the idea of more weight on her back in preparation for riding. She inspires us with every day that she grows in strength and courage!

Wren

Wren is a 5-year-old BLM mustang gelding who was an owner surrender here in Wyoming. Named for 17th-18th century scientist, mathematician, and architect Sir Christopher Wren, Wren is good-natured, although still skittish around people. Stay tuned for updates on Wren’s training.

Update 5/26/2020

Wren has been working hard in school and can now be caught in a large paddock, have all four feet cleaned without moving and/or kicking, be lunged both freely and on a line, be walked behind mostly without worry, and can wear a saddle pad and a surcingle like a big boy! This guy’s is super fun to work with and LOVES being with his people.
